Thread Vein Removal

Thread veins or spider veins are tiny blood vessels that run close to the surface of the skin, making red or purple wiggly lines. Thread veins are not broken but rather just slightly dilated. The technical name for them is telangiectasia.

Women are more prone to developing thread veins than men are. This is because, as we age, our skin and blood vessels become more elastic; women are about 10% more likely than men to develop thread veins. They do not correspond to any underlying medical condition, though they can be deemed unsightly and may be a warning sign of circulatory problems. They are usually found on the legs, though other parts of the body may be affected as well.

Thread veins usually develop as a person ages, this is because as we age our skin and blood vessels become more elastic and the valves that are located in our veins begin to weaken. As the valves weaken, blood flows back down the vein, like blood, like water and everything else always flows downhill which is why thread veins are most common in the legs.

The condition can often be caused by hormonal changes associated with menopause and pregnancy, during pregnancy the amount of blood in the body increases significantly, putting more pressure on the veins and the valves. Thread veins can also develop due to too much sun exposure, being overweight, wind exposure, extremes in temperature, some medications or a course of radiotherapy, Sometimes, thread veins just seem to run in families as well.

Many people who have thread veins suffer no serious health problems; they should not affect circulation or cause long-term health issues. If thread veins become problematic or you just feel they are too unsightly, they can be treated in a variety of ways; these include undergoing a phlebectomy, endothermal ablation, compressive stockings, sclerotherapy and of course laser.

This simple and effective procedure uses the power of a Nd:YAG laser. The laser light passes safely through the skin and coagulates the blood in the targeted blood vessel. This causes the vein to break down and be reabsorbed into the surrounding cells.

The Nd:YAG laser emits light which is readily absorbed by blood vessels, heating them to point where they are destroyed. Following treatment, the vessels quickly clear as they are reabsorbed by the body, leaving little or no trace of the original vein.

Laser Tread Vein Removal has been safely used in over one million treatments.

FAQ

How many treatments will I need?

In many cases a real difference may be seen in as few as 1-3 sessions.

The Procedure - What Should I Expect?

Step 1 - Consultation

Our technician will meet with you to discuss your options and to examine the areas which concern you. You will be asked about your medical history and will have an opportunity to ask any questions about the procedure.

Step 2 - Procedure

Treatment usually lasts between 15 - 30 minutes but may vary depending on the number and size of the vessel(s) to be treated. Most clients do not feel any pain though some report a slight stinging or mild prickling sensation. Any discomfort is minor and reported only during the treatment - not after.

Step 3 - Aftercare

You can usually continue with normal activities after treatment but we do ask that clients do not visit the gym, the sauna or take any exercise which will cause overheating. Similarly we ask that you do not expose the area to direct sunlight and use a minimum 30 SPF sunscreen.

Q&A

Is the procedure painful?

Most people liken the sensation to being flicked by an elastic band.

The skin may be red and swollen immediately after treatment but this usually subsides within a few hours. Some veins will darken in colour initially but this resolves as the areas heals.

Adverse reactions are rare but may include a small blister or temporary lightening or darkening of the skin.
